Stay Child: A Playful Display Font for Handmade Labels, Cards & Seasonal Crafts

Designing a Candle Label with Stay Child

While prepping a new line of seasonal soy candles for my shop, I reached for Stay Child to bring a sense of joy and whimsy to the labels. The font’s rounded edges and bouncy baseline immediately gave the design a youthful, approachable feel. It’s perfect for small-batch makers who want to inject personality into their packaging without looking too casual or unpolished. Whether I was printing labels for lavender-scented candles or designing a mockup for a new holiday collection, Stay Child added a touch of charm that felt both intentional and fun.

Visual Personality & Creative Appeal

Stay Child is a display font that radiates warmth and playfulness. Its bold, rounded letters carry a sense of lightheartedness that works especially well for handmade products aimed at children or for designs that want to feel nostalgic and inviting. The font has a consistent weight, with slight variations in letterforms that add character without sacrificing legibility. It’s not overly stylized like some cartoon fonts, which makes it versatile for both print and digital use.

What makes Stay Child stand out is its ability to balance whimsy with professionalism. It’s not just for birthday cards or children’s books—it also works for boutique packaging, rustic signs, or even wedding stationery with a casual twist. Whether I was testing it on a printable wall art set or designing a sticker sheet for a planner page bundle, the font kept the designs feeling cohesive and brand-aligned.

Perfect for Handmade Labels & Product Packaging

I’ve used Stay Child for several label designs, from candle jars to boutique tags for handmade soaps. The font holds up well at small sizes, especially when used with a clean outline or paired with a simpler sans serif for body text. For example, using Stay Child for the product name and a minimalist sans serif like Montserrat for ingredient lists or care instructions made the labels feel both readable and visually balanced.

When designing packaging for a new line of herbal tea blends, I used Stay Child for the product name on the front label. It stood out beautifully against a kraft paper background and gave the product a friendly, artisanal vibe. The font’s rounded edges softened the overall look, making the packaging feel more personal and less commercial.

Great for Greeting Cards & Invitations

For a recent birthday card collection, I wanted something that felt handmade but still had a modern edge. Stay Child delivered the perfect tone. I used it for the main greeting and paired it with a simple script font for a name or date. The contrast between the playful display font and the elegant script created a nice visual rhythm that customers responded to positively.

Stay Child also works well for wedding invitations, especially for rustic or casual themes. I used it for a “Welcome” sign at a barn wedding and found that the font held up beautifully in both print and vinyl formats. It’s also great for digital invitations—when paired with a clean sans serif, it creates a modern yet heartfelt look.

Seasonal Crafts & Digital Downloads

Every holiday season, I create a set of printable wall art and gift tags for my digital shop. Stay Child has become a go-to for these seasonal items. Its rounded letters and cheerful style make it ideal for holiday tags, gift stickers, and festive signs. I especially love using it for phrases like “Merry Everything” or “Happy Holidays” where a bit of bounce and warmth makes all the difference.

For digital downloads like planner pages or printable art, the font’s clarity at different sizes is a big plus. I tested it in both 8.5x11-inch prints and mobile-sized social media graphics, and it scaled well in both formats. Whether I was creating a “To-Do List” header or a quote-based wall print, Stay Child kept the design lively and engaging.

Font Pairing Tips for Makers

One of the best things about Stay Child is how well it pairs with other fonts. When designing product packaging or digital templates, I often pair it with a clean sans serif like Open Sans or a simple serif like Merriweather for secondary text. This combination keeps the design from feeling too busy while still allowing Stay Child to shine as the focal point.

For more decorative projects like wedding invitations or boutique tags, I’ll pair it with a script font like Great Vibes or a handwritten font like Allura. The contrast between the playful display font and the elegant script adds visual interest and helps guide the viewer’s eye through the design.

Readability & Practical Use

Stay Child is best used for short phrases, titles, names, and decorative text. It’s not ideal for long paragraphs or body copy due to its stylized letterforms. However, for product names, greeting cards, signage, and branding elements, it performs exceptionally well.

When using the font for stickers or small labels, I recommend keeping the text short and avoiding overly tight spacing. For cutting machines like Cricut or Silhouette, I always test the font at the intended size to ensure the letters remain distinct and readable after cutting.

Font Features & Licensing

Before using Stay Child in your shop, check the font’s included styles, alternates, ligatures, and swashes. Many display fonts come with extra characters that can add flair to your designs. Also, confirm that the font supports multiple languages if you sell internationally or offer translations in your printables.

Most importantly, always verify the commercial licensing terms. Stay Child is typically sold with a commercial use license, which means it’s safe to use in physical products, digital templates, SVG files, and printables for resale. However, it’s always wise to double-check the specific license agreement to avoid any issues down the line.
